Youth

Life is tough enough at this age without an accident affecting everything. You may find that you are not only dealing with the changes to your body after the accident but to the changes in your home life and what your parents or guardians want or let you do.

Questions we are always asked:

Why do I even need a case manager?

Hopefully if everything goes well with your rehabilitation, you won’t need one for long. In the early stages of rehabilitation, it is useful to have someone there for you who knows all the systems and when and where to get help.  We will work with you to develop your independence in managing your own healthcare.

How can case managers help me?

You are our client. Your goals are what we are working towards. We will work with you to develop independence in managing your new health care needs and look at ways to problem solve.

Is the information we tell you confidential?

Yes. However, there are limits on confidentiality and it does depend on your age, your capacity and other laws. The laws about healthcare confidentiality and when you are under-age differ between states and territories in Australia. Most of what you tell us at Rebound Kids is confidential within the therapy team, including therapist you have outside our organisation, insurance companies and your solicitor.  If your treatment, rehabilitation and care is funded by a third party such as an insurer the reports generated by us are owned by them.

In NSW, you have automatic confidentiality rights when you turn 16. In ACT, the age is 18. Automatic confidentiality means that unless someone’s going to be seriously harmed, a doctor or other health professional has to keep what you say private, even from your parents/guardian. We always recommend keeping your parents in the loop about your rehabilitation especially if you live with them.

Rebound Kids also has to comply with court orders and subpoenas. However, we may only disclose the information specifically described in the order. Being underage changes how confidentiality works and it is probably best to speak with your case manager in more detail. If you have a CTP claim you will need to speak with your solicitor about your rights and responsibilities under the law.
